Meta's Hidden AI Bill: $700 Billion Off the Balance Sheet

A Wall Street Journal investigation found that Meta and other major AI companies are spending far more on AI projects than their financial statements show, with a substantial share of that spending kept off the balance sheet through behind-the-scenes deals. According to the report, Meta's off-balance-sheet obligations total roughly $693 billion — and are tied mainly to AI infrastructure.

That figure comes on top of the spending disclosed in the company's official quarterly reports. In its second-quarter report, Meta capped its 2026 AI infrastructure spending at $145 billion — but that number doesn't include additional costs that only kick in once the underlying projects are complete.

WSJ points to the massive "Hyperion" data center project in Louisiana, whose footprint is roughly equivalent to 1,700 football fields. Meta has agreed to lease the facility on a four-year contract starting in 2029, with the option to extend up to 20 years, and has guaranteed bondholders full repayment if it cancels the contract early. Because Meta judged the likelihood of that payout as "not high," it didn't record the obligation on its balance sheet — part of what WSJ estimates as $347 billion in future lease commitments.

Meta's massive investment rests on a core assumption that its AI projects will become a major revenue source down the road. If that bet doesn't pay off, the company could find itself in serious financial trouble. At the same time, Meta is embroiled in a major lawsuit over social media's harms and, according to a 2025 Forrester survey, ranks among the least-trusted corporations in the world.

That poses a serious obstacle to Meta's personal AI ambitions, which require giving AI tools access to millions of users' health, financial, and personal data. Given the company's current trust deficit, achieving that goal any time soon may not come easily.
