SEO's Blind Spot: What Happens After the Click?

SEO's Blind Spot: What Happens After the Click?

SEO has long had a blind spot: bringing people to a site has traditionally been treated as the finish line, even as large language models have fundamentally changed how users find and reach websites. Today, branded traffic is up and traffic from organic search results is down, with users landing on sites at every stage of the buying journey. SEO practitioners have started calling this 'SEO's blind spot' — because, in truth, every element on a site should be working toward conversion and core KPIs.

According to Semrush research, roughly 68% of searches on traditional search engines never result in a click at all. That means driving traffic to a site has gotten harder than ever, as more and more visits come from branded or direct search rather than the top of the funnel. As a result, SEO content needs to be far more targeted than before — otherwise, even a click that does happen but never converts into a customer is simply wasted effort.

New job titles like 'content and growth engineer' are emerging today, blending SEO, conversion rate optimization (CRO), and sometimes answer engine optimization (AEO). Success for an SEO specialist used to be measured purely by traffic driven to the site, with the next step — closing the sale — considered another department's job. That's no longer true: competition in every industry has intensified to the point where 'just drive more traffic' no longer works.

A few signs indicate a site is generating traffic without driving conversion: vanity metrics (like pageviews) climb while revenue doesn't; landing pages rank well in search but see low click-through rates; time on page stays short; users never scroll to the bottom of the page; blog traffic grows while visits to product or pricing pages don't. Conversely, when traffic and conversion are optimized together, demo requests rise, the share of returning visitors grows, branded search volume increases, and sales reports more customers coming through the organic channel.

Experts recommend several practical steps for reorienting SEO content toward conversion: talk to sales and read customer reviews to build a deeper understanding of the ideal customer profile (ICP); write content as if speaking 'to one' — addressing each reader individually; add clear calls to action (CTAs) that make the next step obvious; strip out jargon and overly complex language to simplify the text; and structure content to be easily scannable, with headers and short summaries. In short, SEO is no longer just about ranking high in search — it's about guiding users through the entire buying journey and driving them toward the outcome that actually matters: conversion.

AI Tools Recommend Brands, But Send the Link Elsewhere

New analysis finds that Google AI Mode, ChatGPT, and Perplexity often name a brand when answering shopping queries, but link out to third-party sites rather than the brand's own page — a fresh headache for ecommerce brands.
