Reddit's Citation Share in ChatGPT Search Collapsed 86% in Four Days

Reddit's share of citations in ChatGPT Search answers fell 86.4% over just four days, according to new data from AI visibility platform Promptwatch. The drop began on August 14, after several weeks of relative stability.
What happened. Promptwatch reports that between July 18 and August 7, Reddit accounted for an average of 3.83% of all ChatGPT Search citations. On August 14, that figure fell below 1%, and by August 17 it averaged just 0.52%.
An initial dip was actually recorded as early as August 8 — a date Promptwatch says coincides with a change to ChatGPT Search's query fan-out process. At that point, Reddit's citation share slid from the upper-3% range down to the mid-2% range, before dropping sharply again six days later.
The shift appears to be specific to ChatGPT. Promptwatch found no similar one-day cliff in Google's AI products — instead, Reddit's citation share in Google AI Overviews declined gradually, from roughly 2.5% in early July to 2.1% by August.
This analysis only measures which sources are getting cited more or less — it doesn't explain why Reddit started appearing less often in ChatGPT's answers, or whether this reflects a lasting shift in how sources are selected. But one thing is clear: Reddit has long been one of the most heavily relied-upon sources for AI platforms, and this episode is another reminder of just how quickly AI search visibility can shift — which is exactly why brands shouldn't bet everything on a single AI platform.
