Microdrama app downloads jumped 95% year over year, and advertisers are taking notice

Downloads of short-form drama apps, known as microdramas, grew 95.5% year-over-year in the first half of 2026 to reach 1.45 billion — far outpacing the 16.6% overall growth rate for non-gaming apps, according to data Mintegral shared with Marketing Dive.
The number of active advertisers in microdrama apps rose 132%, while creative volume climbed 151%. Emerging markets are leading global downloads, with Southeast Asia at 518 million and Latin America at 355 million, while Europe, the Americas and the Middle East together account for just 17% of total downloads.
Only one category — e-commerce — posted negative growth, declining 4.4% year-over-year. Education apps posted the second-highest growth rate at 25.3%, followed by utility apps at 25%. Social networking apps had the lowest growth rate, at just 7.9%.
As consumers spend more time on short, vertical video content, brands are looking for ways to tap into the trend. Companies from Marc Jacobs to Dr Pepper have taken their own approach to microdrama content, leaning into comedic love triangles and melodramatic storylines — a format that resonates especially well with Gen Z. According to Mintegral's report, microdrama is the only category with a "creative density" score — the ratio of ads to active apps — above 1,100 across Asia-Pacific, Europe and Southeast Asia, outpacing even e-commerce on that metric.
The top microdrama app, FreeReals, was downloaded 195.8 million times in the first half of 2026 — nearly 100 million more than its closest competitor, NetShort, at 98.9 million. The report was produced by AI-powered ad platform Mintegral and mobile marketing platform Insightrackr, and excludes mainland China.
