Instagram Unveils New Logo

Instagram has refreshed its visual brand for the first time in more than a decade. Platform head Adam Mosseri announced the new wordmark design via Threads. The updated logo looks sharper and more modern while still holding onto the design principles behind Instagram's original identity.

In Mosseri's words: "Today we updated the Instagram wordmark, which was over 10 years old and starting to feel dated. We think the new version feels sharper and more modern, while still nodding to the original and keeping the simplicity and craftsmanship that has always defined Instagram." The comment reflects the company's effort to frame the change as an evolution of the existing brand rather than a complete overhaul.

The refresh wasn't limited to the logo alone — Instagram rolled out a full brand system, including new typefaces, icons, and formats. For now, the changes are mostly visible in the app's header, and the company hasn't formally announced any major functional updates tied to the redesign.

User reaction to the update has been mixed. Mosseri's announcement posts on Instagram and Threads drew more than 5,000 comments combined. Critics specifically pointed out that the stylized "r" in the new typeface looks like a "z." Other commenters ignored the visual changes altogether, instead demanding algorithm fixes that would prioritize content from accounts they actually follow.

For brand owners and marketers, it's a useful signal: even one of the world's biggest platforms occasionally has to refresh its visual identity to keep pace with current taste and technology. At the same time, the example shows that users often value functional improvements far more than visual ones — a reminder for brands to balance design with user experience.
