Google's August Spam Update Shook Up Rankings Harder Than Expected

Google's August Spam Update Shook Up Rankings Harder Than Expected

The anti-spam updates Google rolls out every few months have long become routine for SEO professionals, but the latest one, in August 2026, turned out to be considerably stronger than expected. According to data SE Ranking shared with Search Engine Land, the scale of movement in the search results this time was notably larger than typical fluctuations.

Per the company's report, 16.71% of pages that had previously ranked in the top 10 dropped below position 100 for the same keyword during the update. Compare that to the 9.2% figure recorded during a period with no confirmed update — nearly double: the odds of a top-10 page falling entirely out of the top 100 rose by roughly 1.8x. Falling from the top 10 to below position 100 is a far more serious loss than the ordinary day-to-day noise in search rankings.

SE Ranking conducted its analysis by tracking US organic results across 100,000 keywords in 20 different industries, comparing the days before and after the update (August 17 and 22) against a period with no confirmed update (July 26–31). Volatility was significant across all 20 industries: the lowest top-10 stability score was in real estate at 74.64%, while the highest was in fashion and beauty at 85.55%. YMYL categories ("Your Money or Your Life" — topics that directly affect a user's finances or health, such as real estate and healthcare) proved more stable than others — reaffirming, once again, Google's more cautious approach to such sensitive subjects.

The analysis does have its limits: SE Ranking did not run a domain-level breakdown of which site types or spam tactics were hit hardest, and it remains unclear whether the pages that dropped out were removed from the index entirely or simply fell below position 100.

For marketers and SEO professionals in Uzbekistan, the takeaway is fairly concrete: if your site saw a sharp traffic drop in August, the cause may not be a mistake on your part but a global algorithmic shift from Google. In periods like this, rather than making hasty changes, it's advisable to watch how rankings settle over the following weeks.
