Fragrance is lifting beauty sales as consumers chase emotional value

Fragrance, skincare and self-care products drove strong growth for the U.S. beauty industry in the first half of 2026, according to a report from Circana. Prestige retail sales rose 7% year-over-year to $17.1 billion, while mass-market sales climbed the same 7% to $39.2 billion.
Circana's global beauty industry advisor, Larissa Jensen, said shoppers have been focused since the start of the year on getting the most value for their money: "Beauty continues to benefit from consumers' willingness to shop across price tiers, selectively investing in products that deliver the strongest emotional and functional value," she said.
Fragrance has been one of the strongest categories so far this year. In the prestige segment, fragrance sales grew 6% and average price rose 5%, while unit sales were essentially flat — suggesting the growth came largely from shoppers trading up to higher-concentration formulas like perfume and eau de parfum. In the mass market, fragrance became the fastest-growing category, with sales up 15% and units up 7%.
Skincare was the fastest-growing category in prestige, with sales up 9% and unit sales rising by a double-digit percentage. Body care grew 16%, and sun care rose 19%. Meanwhile, color cosmetics (makeup) posted the weakest performance — prestige sales rose just 3%, and unit sales actually declined.
Looking ahead, Jensen said: "Beauty's growth will continue to be shaped by strong consumer interest in key categories and constantly evolving shopping behaviors. As e-commerce and social platforms play an increasingly large role in product discovery and purchasing, brands that can create a seamless path from inspiration to transaction will be best positioned to capture future growth."
